Artwork Description:
The Air Up Here by Heidi K. Brandow (Diné & Kanaka Maoli) is a striking mixed media work that merges playful imagery with layered cultural commentary. A stitched-mouth yellow figure drifts in a surreal red-cloud sky scape, balancing humor with quiet defiance. Blending hand-drawn line work, bold color, wood, and resin, Brandow reclaims narrative space with her Pop-inflected symbology. Both humorous and haunting, the piece resists simplification while asserting Indigenous presence within contemporary art. This original work is ideal for collectors seeking art that bridges identity, critique, and visual play.

About The Artwork

The Air Up Here is a bold and imaginative mixed media wall sculpture by Diné (Navajo) and Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) artist, Heidi K. Brandow. Known for her distinctive fusion of Pop Art aesthetics with Indigenous storytelling, Brandow's work challenges colonial narratives while celebrating personal and cultural identity.

Crafted from wood, acrylic, graphite, paper, and acrylic resin, this original artwork features one of Brandow’s iconic yellow characters as an expressive, cartoon-like figure with stitched eyes and a sealed mouth floating in a surreal, vibrant sky of red clouds and black-and-white patterning. The playful design masks deeper meanings of visibility, voice, and self-definition in the face of cultural erasure.
