About The Artwork

D.C. Allen paints Crystal Worl looking up. Behind her is Raven rendered in her own composition, the central crest of her clan set among the stars. In the oral traditions Raven released the sun, moon, and stars and brought light into the world, and continues as a guide whose stories shape Tlingit knowledge and identity. Worl's gaze lifts toward that figure. She is looking at her own inheritance and her own hand at once.

Worl is Athabascan, Filipino, and Tlingit, of the Raven moiety, Sockeye Clan, from the Raven House, and Deg Hit'an Athabascan from Fairbanks, Alaska. She is widely recognized for revitalizing Northwest Coast design through painting, printmaking, and public art, and as co-founder of Trickster Company. Her practice reimagines clan stories through a contemporary lens is proof that Indigenous visual languages are living traditions, still moving across generations.

Allen dresses her as she lives: contemporary clothing, and a traditional shawl from her community. That combination is the argument the painting makes. Artist, entrepreneur, educator, advocate Worl moves between worlds without leaving either.

A significant portrait for collectors of contemporary Indigenous art, Northwest Coast design, and Native women's work. Ships ready to hang.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

DC Allen "Del Curfman"

DC Allen aka Del Curfman grew up in the divides between his Apsáalooke (Crow Tribe of Montana) heritage and the greater Western/Montana/ Non-Native culture, forever influencing him and his artwork. A graduate and alumni of the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) and emerging artist, his work has found significance as a reminder that American Indian culture and traditions have not faded into history or obscurity. His artwork is a conduit for cross-cultural dialogue. Through time, space, and movement his paintings transgress the boundaries and limits of American Indian stereotypes. His work has been featured internationally, at the Field Museum of Chicago and the Neubauer, in local and national publications, and in galleries in New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and Bristol U.K.

The artist is now based in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he remains concentrated on creating socially aware, community-engaged artwork.
