ABOUT THE ARTIST

JESUS MIGUEL AVENA

Jesus Miguel Avena is a Queer Mexican-American oil painter and ceramicist based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His work explores identity, culture, and self-expression through personal narratives and Mesoamerican influences. Avena earned an Associate's in Fine Arts from Santa Fe Community College in 2022 and a Bachelor of Studio Arts from the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in 2024.

His early experience includes an internship with the Georgia O'Keefe
Museum's Art and Leadership Boys Program and participation in SITE Santa Fe's Young Curators show, Pick, in 2016. In 2019, he received an "Award of Excellence" from Connection, a national competition for emerging artists with disabilities. His work was featured in the 2023–2024 IAIA BFA Exhibition, Indigenous Presence, Indigenous Futures.
